Long live ITIL!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Some people today claim there is no need for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmc.com\/solutions\/esm-initiative\/IT-Infrastructure-Library-ITIL.html\">ITIL<\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmc.com\/solutions\/esm-initiative\/itsm-it-service-management.html\">ITService Management<\/a>.  I have actually visited multiple customers who have said,\u201cPlease don\u2019t  talk about ITIL around here, ITIL just does not work for us\u201d.There are  also organizations that think \u201cthe cloud\u201d replaces the need for  ITservice management or ITIL. To those people and organizations \u201cITIL is  dead\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">On  the other hand, there are many organizations that ITIL is important,  and while maybe not a state of nirvana,it has provided a framework and a  path in which to bring order to chaos.\u00a0 In our most recent ITSMtoday  Pulse Survey,only 20% of companies had no plans to implement any version  of ITIL.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/communities.bmc.com\/communities\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/38-3017-17822\/Pulse+survey_ITIL.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pulse survey_ITIL.png\" class=\"lazyload jive-image\" height=\"116\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27197%27%20height%3D%27116%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20197%20116%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27197%27%20height%3D%27116%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/communities.bmc.com\/communities\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/38-3017-17822\/197-116\/Pulse+survey_ITIL.png\" style=\"float: left;\" width=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I do agree that ITIL has had its period of hype followed by failed expectations. If you follow the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/technology\/research\/hype-cycles\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Gartner model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">,  that solution areas go through expectation periods of \u201ctechnology  trigger\u201d, followed by \u201cpeak of inflated expectation\u201d (the hype), then  through the \u201ctrough of disillusionment\u201d before gaining traction in the  \u201cslope of enlightenment\u201d then finally becoming a commodity and commonly  adopted in the \u201cplateau of productivity\u201d. ITIL has definitely followed  this path.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">ITIL  for some is in the \u201ctrough of disillusionment\u201d and for others in the  \u201cslope of enlightenment\u201d progressing towards changing the organization  for the better. The difference in these two types of out comes is the  ability to execute based on capabilities and resources internally and  externally with partners. The organizations that believe ITIL is dead or  has no value need to take a look around the organization and assess  whether incident management, problem management, change management, etc  matters in their organization. They also need to look around and decided  if the organization\u2019s focus is on delivery or support of services or  products to customers that are efficient, effective, and economical to  met business outcomes. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If  the organization is losing customers, does not care about customer  satisfaction, return on investment,total cost of ownership and quality  of whatever is produced or supported then I agree ITIL is dead and  service does not matter. To this organization, ITIL is probably just a  hobby or worse, a distraction.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">ITIL  disciplines and processes can exist in every organization that wants to  deliver and support outstanding products and services for customers.  Whether, the organization has knowledge of ITIL or not, ITIL can still  exist. ITIL education can empower people with knowledge.People are the  key to success.
