{"id":10592,"date":"2011-06-14T06:34:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-14T11:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devweb.rjrinnovations.com\/everything-i-know-about-itsm-i-learned-from-darwin-part-ii-2\/"},"modified":"2016-10-13T10:21:31","modified_gmt":"2016-10-13T14:21:31","slug":"everything-i-know-about-itsm-i-learned-from-darwin-part-ii-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rjrinnovations.com\/fr\/everything-i-know-about-itsm-i-learned-from-darwin-part-ii-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Everything I know about ITSM I learned from Darwin- Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"color: white;\"><i><b>\u201cIT is not the strongest or the smartest of the species who survives, it is the one most adaptable to change\u201d \u2013 Charles Darwin<\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\"><i><b><br \/><\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><b> <\/b>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\"><b>To all of the fans of Darwin who somehow became a member of the IT Service Management world: <\/b><b>A series of observation s and perhaps a prediction or two\u2026..<a href=\"https:\/\/communities.bmc.com\/communities\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/38-3022-17862\/evolution.jpg\"><\/a><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">Now,  let\u2019s flash-forward a wee bit and look upon those earlier days of  innocence and laughter from the perspective of many IT data center  managers who were relieved of their duties because they thought the  above verbal exchange was the \u201cright and proper thing to do.\u201d <\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">No\u2026that can\u2019t be right.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">Better  yet, let\u2019s look at it from the perspective of the next generation of IT  Professionals who were assigned the task of cleaning up the messes left  behind by their predecessors who thought the above verbal exchange was  the \u201cright and proper thing to do\u201d.\u00a0 Yes\u2026that seems to be better aligned  with the IT professional Evolutionary Theory with which we began\u2026<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\"><b>Looking Ahead<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">Those  new age technology theologians had an advantage over their predecessors  that is very similar to the advantage that opposable thumbs gives us  over our distant simian relatives; Experience. The idea being that <i>Good Sound Judgment<\/i> is based on <i>Experience<\/i> which is unfortunately based on the lessons garnered from <i>Extremely Bad Judgment<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">In  order to improve our relations with our users, customers, and sponsors,  we had to devise a new paradigm of operations. One based upon customer  satisfaction which in turn is dependent upon the implementation of &#8211; and  adherence to \u2013 a set of processes and practices whose application  delivered a visible and demonstrable sense of value while mitigating  risk and dissatisfaction.\u00a0 Add to this new age wisdom that the \u201cvalue\u201d  of these supported services needed to be thoroughly articulated in some  sort of agreement that bespoke of the expected characteristics of that  service\u2026yes the new technology theologians brought to this earth a  Service Level Agreement.\u00a0 Marvelous. You can almost see those thumbs  growing as we move through this tale\u2026.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\"><b>The Rise of New Technology Serf Class<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">Let\u2019s recap \u2013 and then add an unexpected element:<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">So  far, we have come out of the water, ascended and descended the tree\u2019s,  relocated to a nice dry cave and then relocated yet again to a better  cave with raised flooring and air conditioning and wondrous technology  that manipulated data whose current inhabitants were some strange  sub-species, who eventually and without any reason whatsoever \u2013 <i>other than having mastered the art of communication and documentation behind our backs <\/i>&#8211;  became the dominant life form that still to this day\u2026.seem to have  supreme authority over us; the new technology serf class. Odd how things  work out sometimes, isn\u2019t it?<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white; height: 8pt; min-height: 8pt; padding: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: white;\">Odd  \u2013 but extremely just. You see, it all comes back to communication. And  this is the main theme behind this monologue.\u00a0 We have evolved because  of communication.
