There was a time when \u201centerprise\u201d and \u201cmobile\u201d were rarely seen\u00a0 together \u2013 only in the shadowy recesses of IT drudgery like ashamed lovers forced to elope or endure the paternal humiliation of CFO scrutiny. That was 2009.<\/p>\n

Now, they gallivant openly, Kardashian-like in the publicness of their affection. In a reversal of fortune unimaginable two years ago, to avoid CFO scrutiny today every project “must” include mobility \u2013 showcase it, embrace it, celebrate it. Mobile first: the new mantra of IT. Who would have thought?<\/p>\n

Recently, we\u2019ve seen this trend accelerate in ways we didn\u2019t foresee even a few months ago. Case in point: the call we received from a telecom service provider that purchased BMC Mobility, then Aeroprise, more than a year ago, relegated its mobile self service and change approvals project to IT purgatory, and all of a sudden \u201cneeds to implement it for 10,000 employees in the next three weeks.” Great! But, uh, what happened?<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how that conversation went:<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cUh, what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

TB (\u201cTelecom Behemoth\u201d VP of IT): \u201cWell, we planned to mobilize self service a year back. But then\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

[Note: there’s always a “…but then…”]\n

TB: \u201c\u2026our timeline for deploying self service got delayed by a Remedy upgrade and, well, mobility was postponed also.\u201d<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cWhy the urgency now?\u201d<\/p>\n

TB:\u00a0 \u201cSimple. In the past year everyone got smartphones \u2013 we went from zero\u00a0 to 2,300 Android devices alone in 12 months \u2013 and now the business says nobody is using the new self-service portal because it\u2019s not available on smartphones.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve invested a ton in every aspect of the portal but we literally have customer outages going unreported for days because nobody\u2019s at a PC\u00a0 anymore. So we thought mobility was a phase two and it turns out it\u2019s more like a phase zero. Yeah, we got the tail and the dog mixed up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cWow. I see. And who\u2019s behind the sudden urgency?\u201d<\/p>\n

TB:\u00a0 \u201cThe business owner \u2013 the VP of Field Operations who reports to the COO. We were afraid of the CFO before, but now he\u2019s putty in our hands.\u00a0 Turns out he never opposed the project. It\u2019s just the business wasn\u2019t vocal enough about mobility because they weren\u2019t mobile.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s one of three similar conversations from the past weeks.\u00a0 And while they may be unrelated, I guarantee they\u2019re symptomatic of a broader trend. So, lovers: elope no more. Enterprise IT: prepare for some serious, unabashed PDA (not the \u201cpersonal\u201d or \u201cdigital\u201d kind) in 2011. <\/p>\n
